New Democratic Memo Confirms School Choice Support Strong with African American Community in Wisconsin

Oct 28, 2016 | Press Release

A recently disclosed email memo from Democratic consulting firm, The Atlas Project, confirmed that there is strong support for school choice within the African American community in Wisconsin.

The memo notes, “Many community leaders and African American ministers and pastors strongly support continuing this program… Although it has not yet cost Democrats votes, it is extremely important for Democrats to handle their politics and message on this issue very carefully.”

This newly revealed memo corroborates a recent state wide survey conducted by Public Opinion Strategies. Their poll results found that 54% of all likely voters and 42% of self-identified Democrats support school choice.

“This should come as no surprise,” said Justin Moralez of the American Federation for Children. “As we continue to see increased enrollment growth and better test scores by choice students, families from all over Wisconsin are embracing the idea of education alternatives. We look forward to more Democratic leaders in office adhering to their constituent’s desire for educational opportunities.”

Jason Fields, a Democrat who will represent Milwaukee in the State Assembly next year, stated “The Democratic Party needs to reexamine itself as it relates to the support of African-Americans, you cannot say you’re with us, but then leave us in an environment where are children are not receiving a quality education.

Fields goes on to suggest, “When we look at what’s occurring in our community, and if we believe that education is the way out, Then the Dems need to question why so many of their so called faithful are waiting for them to actually catch up and support our rights as African Americans to obtain a great education.”

Are working class families outside of Milwaukee & Racine too "rich" for educational opportunity for their children?

Ed Willing I agree. This is frustrating. My son shouldn't have to possibly lose his ability to attend a choice school because his parents make more money either. Once you're in, you're in. But any interruption invalidates your qualification. This discriminates against the middle class.
Jennifer Thomas It's going to get worse with Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary.
George F. Ashley That's stupid.
